Ahmeti – Garcia: Spain gives full support to North Macedonia’s EU accession

Ahmeti – Garcia: Spain gives full support to North Macedonia’s EU accession
Tetovo, 3 February 2022 (MIA) – Democratic Union for Integration (DUI) leader, Ali Ahmeti, met Thursday with Spanish Ambassador to North Macedonia, Jose Luis Lozano Garcia. Ahmeti expressed readiness for close cooperation, wishing Ambassador Garcia success in his new post. Participants in the meeting highlighted the longstanding friendship and relations between the two countries, as well as the will to further deepen cooperation in the process of integration, as well as in the area of economy, trade, etc., DUI said in a press release. Talks also tackled recent political developments in the country, as well as talks over the dispute with Bulgaria. “As regards the Electoral Code, Ahmeti believes the current model which includes six electoral districts is more appropriate, because a change of the Electoral Code and the electoral districts requires wider consensus and alignment of all political factors in the country, and it should be put for debate in the Parliament,” reads the press release. Interlocutors also discussed vetting of politicians, judges and prosecutors. “With such spirit of respect for the judicial system and the initiative it raised, DUI aims for further expansion with the sole purpose of achieving credibility of the individuals in all spheres of life, because anyone who wants to hold a public office needs to pass the process of vetting,” says the party. Ahmeti and Garcia concluded that elections are not a solution at this point, because the country is moving forward and the integration process should not be blocked, according to DUI. In addition, resolving all disputes with neighboring countries is a positive thing for the Republic of North Macedonia in joining the big European family. During the meeting, Ahmeti briefed Garcia on the new dynamics in the talks over resolving the dispute with Bulgaria, the visits to Skopje and Sofia, establishing dialogue, the action plan of the working groups, and the good political will to resolve outstanding issues. Ahmeti and Garcia concluded that the cooperation between North Macedonia and Spain should continue in the spirit of understanding, and support to the country on the EU path should not stop until the ultimate goal is achieved.
