Ademi-Geer: Supreme Court’s activities are a model of entire judiciary

Skopje, 5 August 2024 (MIA) – Supreme Court President Besa Ademi met Monday with the EU Ambassador David Geer.

During the meeting, Ademi underscored that it is crucial that the Supreme Court’s activities have been positively assessed in the recent European Union Rule of Law Report, as stated by the Supreme Court.

“The positive assessments of the Supreme Court of the Republic of North Macedonia represent a continuation of the European Commission’s reports in recent years, and this serves as a major motivation to continue with the same commitments and programme goals. Implementing the European Commission’s recommendations is crucial for our EU path,” Ademi said, expressing gratitude to the EU Ambassador for his commitment and the EU’s support for the rule of law and judicial independence.

Ambassador Geer underlined that the innovation and creativity of the Supreme Court are commendable, particularly regarding issues related to judicial openness, public interest and the advancement of judicial practices. This includes principled positions on transparency in cases of public interest, the application of the European Convention on Human Rights, and the matter of a healthy environment.

The meeting also emphasized the importance of the Supreme Court President’s visits to lower courts across the country, where discussions focus on key issues such as financial independence, staffing, efficiency, accountability and solidarity.

In this regard, it was highlighted that the Supreme Court serves as a good example for the entire judiciary and that the positive assessments are a clear signal that only through consistent adherence to European standards and principles of an independent judiciary can the reform and European agenda be achieved, according to the Supreme Court’s press release.
