Brussels, 14 March 2022 (dpa/MIA) — Roman Abramovich, the owner of English football club Chelsea, is one of the wealthy Russians targeted in a fourth round of sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, which was approved by EU diplomats on Monday.
Abramovich will be subject to an EU travel ban and asset freeze for his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the main architect of the war in Ukraine, multiple sources said after a meeting of the member states' permanent representatives in Brussels.
Britain already sanctioned the Russian billionaire last week with an asset freeze and travel ban. Abramovich's net worth was recently estimated at $7.2 billion by Forbes magazine.
The package agreed upon by EU leaders at a summit last week also blocks Russia's access to funds from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank and moves to strip Russia of its "most favored nation" status at the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The change in Russia's trade position, taken in coordination with the United States and other allies, allows trade partners to raise tariffs and impose new trade barriers on Moscow.
The sanctions also ban EU investment in the Russian energy sector and block the import of Russian steel and iron. Exporting luxury goods from the EU to Russia is also prohibited as part of the package.
The EU has so far sanctioned 862 individuals and 53 entities including Putin for the invasion of Ukraine, not including the new additions on Monday.
The bloc has resisted targeting Russian energy imports, wary of energy supply concerns, despite criticism from Poland, Latvia and Lithuania.
