Speaker Gashi to call local elections in early August

Skopje, 7 July 2025 (MIA) - Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi told a press briefing on Monday that he is to call the local elections in early August.

Asked whether he will schedule the elections on August 8, Gashi said it was possible, noting that everything will be done in line with deadlines.

"It could be on August 8. Everything will be in line with the deadlines. The Electoral Code has two provisions that guide us. The first is that it should be no more than 90 or less than 70 days. The second orientation point is the Law on Local Self-Government, which states that the elections should be held in the second half of October. Within these two timeframes, we will call the elections. Most likely in the first half of August," said the Parliament Speaker.

As regards amendments to the Electoral Code that are in parliamentary procedure, Gashi pointed out that he is waiting for a response from the parliamentary groups so that the law can go into procedure.

"We have no announcement about the Electoral Code. Discussions are ongoing between the parliamentary groups, but I am not aware of that. I am waiting for a response from the parliamentary groups on whether they have agreed, so that the Electoral Code can go into procedure," he said.

On Badinter majority, the Speaker said there was no change.

"There is no change regarding Badinter. The formulation remains the same," said Gashi.
