Rapid bus transport, well-maintained Vardar quay and solution for landfills are some of Shukova's key projects for Skopje

Skopje, 2 October 2025 (MIA) – Rapid and modern bus transportation – a BRT line connecting the north of Skopje with the south, construction of an amusement park and revitalizing the Skopje Zoo, and a long-term solution for the issues the landfills Vardarishte and Drisal cause are some of the top 20 key projects of SDSM’s candidate for Skopje mayor, Kaja Shukova.

“Skopje has been waiting for a real public transportation for years. The first line from Gjorche Petrov to Novo Lisiche will be finished by 2027. We’re introducing integrated ticket system and priority lanes. A new bridge Vlae-Karposh 4 with six lanes as well as pedestrian and bike lanes to allow transport to be quicker and more eco-friendly. This is more than buses, it is a project for a healthy and mobile future for all of us,” Shukova told a news conference Thursday.

She said the JSP public transportation system will undergo full overhaul with new eco-buses being purchased. Regarding traffic, other projects include construction of bridges, tunnels and new interchanges and the introduction of Zone 30 – enhanced road safety for children.

“Skopje has to be a city custom made for its residents rather than for cars. By emptying pavements and constructing bike lanes, we’re giving priority to pedestrians and to cyclists,” pledged Shukova.

Regarding environment protection, Shukova said that the issue of illegal landfills should be solved immediately. “Clean air isn’t associated to any party,” she said announcing that a selection and recycling center is planned to halve the amount of waste ending in landfills.

Skopje, she said, will get 15 new parks and 10,000 seedlings in the next 15 months as well as subsidies to households to be part of the central heating system so as to reduce pollution from stoves burning wood.

“River Vardar and the quay should be a place of pride, not a problem. With 24/7 eco-patrols we will make Vardar a place for recreation,” said Shukova.

As regards cultural and urban life of the capital, the SDSM candidate announced a digital tourist map containing all the famous landmarks in Skopje and transformation of the GTC mall into a hub for youth, start-ups and culture.

“Skopje must become a regional center for events,” Shukova stressed announcing a new 3,000-seat Congress Center.

Skopje Adventure, a unique complex made up of a zoo, aquarium and an amusement park, is also one of the projects announced for Shukova that is family-friendly.

“Today I presented the most important projects that will shape Skopje in the coming years. They are only the beginning of our vision for a modern, green and dynamic city that belongs to the resident, eliminating chaos,” concluded Shukova.
