President expects peaceful elections, campaign rhetoric blurs election purpose

Skopje, 15 October 2025 (MIA) - President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova said Wednesday she expects the coming local elections to be peaceful while noting that the campaign rhetoric blurs the purpose for which they are held.

"I am trying to see things from the sidelines because I am the President of all citizens and don't want to have any political influence. First, these are local elections and they should focus on the right persons prepared to solve local problems. It is very difficult for me to make a distinction on the type of elections we are having. Second, I don't believe that the State Election Commission, with all of its local commissions and boards, does not have the capacity to administer fair and democratic elections. I expect the elections to be peaceful, enabling citizens to choose as they wish," President Siljanovska Davkova told reporters.

She said that party leaders have an enlightenment mission and citizens cannot be expected to exercise control on social media if they are inspired by those who should be the dialogue makers.

"This is unacceptable. I know that elections involve passion but I believe that civility in speaking is the most important aspect when it comes to leaders. The same goes for party spokespersons. Across the globe, spokespersons are promoters of dialogue of peace, not insults. We must overcome this if we want to be a decent European democratic country," said Siljanovska Davkova.
