Parliament adopts changes to Law on Customs Tariff, rates of 67 commodities reduced, import duties for US goods cancelled

Skopje, 24 June 2025 (MIA) - The Parliament adopted Tuesday the amendments to the Law on Customs Tariff, reducing the customs rates of 67 commodities, primarily raw and processed materials used in the national industry. The amendments also cancel the import duties for goods originating from the United States.

The Ministry of Finance said in a press release that the amendments are part of the Government's Programme 2024-2028, stipulating a gradual harmonization of customs rates with those in the European Union, adapted to the economic needs of the Macedonian economy.

It adds that the amendments were drafted in consultation with the chambers of commerce and aim to support the business community. The main objective is to increase competitiveness, stimulate exports and attract new investments, especially in the processing industry, metallurgy, automotive sector and energy.

The cuts of customs duties for lithium-ion batteries for electricity storage are especially significant for the development of the energy sector, improvement of the system's stability and support to investments in renewable sources.

In addition, the full liberalization of import of commodities originating from the United States aims to strengthen the domestic market's competitiveness and sends a positive message in international trade, while opening the room for reciprocity and enhancing the strategic partnership between the two countries, reads the press release.
