Gevgelija, 10 October 2025 (MIA) — The largest infrastructure project that not only Macedonia but all of Southeastern Europe will see is the high-speed railway between Skopje and Thessaloniki, VMRO-DPMNE vice president Aleksandar Nikoloski told a campaign rally in Gevgelija ahead of the Oct. 19 local elections.
"The second largest train station after Skopje will be the Gevgelija train station," Nikoloski said, adding that the train trip from Gevgelija would take an hour and 10 minutes to Skopje and half an hour to Thessaloniki.
"It will also mean a lot for business, because the Thessaloniki port will literally be at the fingertips of all exporting companies," Nikoloski said, announcing that a contractor had already been chosen and soon the expansion of the existing border crossing would start, as well.
"More lanes will be added so that businesses, those involved in transport, can operate more easily," Nikoloski said.
He said the VMRO-DPMNE government had provided enormous support to Gevgelija in the past 15 months.
He listed some local projects under way, including works on the Gevgelija perimeter road, the Konjsko dam and the highway section between Smrdliva Voda and Kozhuf Ski Center, which he said should boost tourism.
Nikoloski also announced new projects, such as building water supply and sewage systems as well as reconstructing streets in the surrounding villages of Moin, Prdejci and Bogorodica. mr/
