Skopje, 18 September 2025 (MIA) - Through the Ministry of Transport, the Government is realizing a set of measures to improve infrastructure in municipalities in order to boost traffic safety and the quality of life. At the same time, we are also creating a new rulebook for the design and construction of cycling infrastructure in municipalities, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski said at a conference Thursday focused on improving urban transport.

“The Transport Ministry is joining the largest European campaign raising awareness for sustainable transport and boosting the quality of life in cities. With this, we are affirming our commitment to moving in the same direction with the best European practices. The 2018-2030 National Transport Strategy foresees a measure to support bigger cities in drafting plans for sustainable urban mobility. This support includes developing plans for sustainable urban mobility for Kavadarci, Prilep, Kochani, Strumica, Struga, in accordance with the EU guidelines for the development and implementation of sustainable urban mobility plans,” Nikoloski said.
He stressed that the Ministry is especially focused on promoting the standards for cycling infrastructure in order to boost safety for cyclists.
"In the Law on Public Roads, we have provided a basis for the adoption of a rulebook on the design and construction of cycling infrastructure, and in cooperation with the civil sector, we have drafted a proposed rulebook that will be adopted in the coming period. With this, we aim to send a message that the bicycle, as a symbol of sustainable mobility, is an equal means of transport and not just a tool for recreation. With support from the state and the vision of municipalities, we can build cities that are more sustainable, safer, and better places to live," Nikoloski stressed.
The conference was held as part of European Mobility Week under the theme “Mobility for Everyone”.
