New postal stamp honours women’s role in building peace, 25 years from UNSCR 1325

Skopje, 30 October 2025 (UNWomen/MIA) - To mark the 25th anniversary of the historic United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security, the UN Women Office in North Macedonia and the Post Office of North Macedonia have launched a commemorative postal stamp and seal dedicated to women’s leadership in building peace and security.

Resolution 1325, adopted on 31 October 2000, recognizes the crucial role of women in preventing and resolving conflicts, in peace negotiations, peacebuilding, peacekeeping missions, humanitarian response, and post-conflict reconstruction.

The commemorative postal stamp and seal were designed by Nita Hadzihamza Gashi, a talented designer and feminist known for her bold visual expression. The design portrays a woman standing tall and unwavering, a symbol of resilience and strength, releasing a white dove that soars freely into the sky. The dove represents a universal call for peace, echoing the hope carried by every woman and girl for a safer, fairer, and more equal world. The vibrant blue and yellow tones and the clean lines of the design capture both softness and determination, representing the enduring power of women who lead, protect, and build communities even in times of uncertainty.

“This commemorative stamp is a beautiful reminder of the courage, perseverance, and unwavering dedication of women to peace and that peace is not only built at negotiation tables but also in homes, communities, and hearts where women stand on the frontlines every day,” said Vesna Ivanovikj-Casterede, Head of Office of UN Women North Macedonia. “It sends a powerful message to future generations that lasting peace and security cannot be achieved without the equal participation, leadership, and voice of women. Peace is hope and harmony, and it is much more than the absence of conflict. Peace begins with each of us.”

The initiative represents a partnership between UN Women and national institutions in advancing the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda. Over the past 25 years, this agenda has become a cornerstone of global efforts to ensure greater participation of women in decision-making processes in the defence and security sectors.

“A postal stamp is more than a symbol, it travels, carries messages, connects people, and tells stories. This stamp tells the story of women who build bridges where walls once stood, and of their strength that sustains peace,” said Dimitar Dimitrovski, Communications Analyst at UN Women North Macedonia. “Every letter that carries this stamp will bear a symbol and a wish for peace to reach every home and every heart.”

Through this initiative, North Macedonia joins the global efforts to honour the legacy of Resolution 1325 and reaffirm its commitment to empowering women as architects of peace and security in their communities and beyond.

The commemorative postal stamp and seal are available through the Post Office of North Macedonia as of 30 October 2025.
