Mucunski: No deal exists with UK for opening migrants’ return hub

Skopje, 11 October 2025 (MIA) — Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Timcho Mucunski has dismissed claims that the government had discussed or concluded any agreement with the United Kingdom to accept migrants.

Earlier Saturday, SDSM leader Venko Filipche called on Minister Mucunski to inform the public whether discussions were taking place with the UK on accepting migrants.

Filipche was commenting on an article published in Politico, which said the UK was edging closer to a deal to open migrants’ return hub in a country in the Western Balkans.

"Minister Timcho Mucunski should say whether he has discussed bringing migrants to our country. He should tell us if this has anything to do with that seven billion euro loan package?" Filipche asked.

"I completely reject the misinformation that the government or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade has discussed or concluded any agreement with the United Kingdom to accept migrants. No such thing exists, neither as an initiative nor as a political intention," FM Mucunski responded in a social media post.

The foreign minister said any such speculations were unfounded, harmful and aimed only at scoring political points. "Instead of spreading fake news, we expect all political actors to stick to the facts and show a minimum of responsibility," Mucunski wrote.

"Such statements, unfortunately, reveal complete ignorance of the situation and the country's current diplomatic engagements. With the United Kingdom, we have a strategic partnership based on mutual trust, political, economic and security cooperation, and not on speculation and sensationalism," he noted. mr/
