Skopje 23 May 2025 (MIA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Timcho Mucunski, met Friday in Skopje with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, along with officials from the European External Action Service (EEAS) within the framework of the EU-North Macedonia Security and Defence Dialogue.
In his opening remarks, Mucunski noted that following last year’s Security and Defence Partnership, the country has made a strategic step forward by establishing a comprehensive framework for structured dialogue and practical cooperation in key security areas from addressing hybrid threats and cybersecurity to enhancing resilience, defence capacities, and joint participation in crisis missions and operations.
“Today’s meeting marks the opening of a new chapter in our strategic cooperation and sets a firm basis for a deeper partnership grounded in common values, mutual trust, and shared security interests. In this context, the Security and Defence Partnership and the Dialogue should be viewed as the start of an enhanced strategic approach on our path toward full integration into the EU’s security and defence policies, instruments, and mechanisms even before formal membership. To that end, it is crucial that we jointly work toward fulfilling the shared goal of a stronger, more resilient, and more efficient Europe,” Mucunski said.
He emphasized the importance of security and defence cooperation due to geopolitical instability, hybrid threats, and increasingly complex security challenges that require a decisive response.
He noted that as a country, we have 100 percent alignment with the European Union’s Common Foreign and Security Policy.
"Our participation in EU missions and operations, as well as the EU battlegroups, represents further confirmation of our capability and readiness to act as an equal partner. In this regard, we especially appreciate the support received through the European Peace Facility, amounting to a total of €38 million to date. This support helps us accelerate the modernization and operational capabilities of our armed forces, thereby enhancing our readiness for increased participation in EU missions and operations,” Mucunski said.
The country will not be a passive observer but will act as an active, serious, and responsible partner in shaping Europe’s security future, he added.
“The EU must demonstrate determination and courage and make bold decisions regarding its enlargement policy. Inaction in this regard could allow other geopolitical actors to compete for influence in the region, potentially undermining the Union’s credibility and trust in the entire process. Only a united and strong Europe can address the security challenges ahead of us," Mucunski said.
Mucunski welcomed the proposed introduction of the SAFE instrument, which, by involving candidate countries in joint procurement and modernization of defence capacities, opens opportunities for deeper cooperation, integration of security forces into the European security structure, and revitalization of defence capabilities.
