Mucunski: Difficult EU reforms being implemented, but predictable path needed

Skopje, 22 August 2025 (MIA) - We are ready to complete the difficult reforms – and we are already doing so. This clearly demonstrates the strategic direction we are moving in. But it is also time for the European Union, its institutions, and member states to show equal commitment to our European path, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Timcho Mucunski told NewsMax Balkans, addressing the country’s EU integration, regional issues, NATO membership, the EU partnership in security and defence, and foreign investments.

He stressed that the government remains committed to European integration by implementing reforms and meeting the measurable criteria established by the European Union. At the same time, he noted the need for determination, a fair approach, and a clear, predictable path for the country’s progress. He added that the country firmly upholds its strategic priorities: NATO membership, advancement toward EU membership, and the strategic partnership with the United States.

Mucunski also referred to NATO membership and the country’s contribution to regional, European and global security, including through the Security and Defence Partnership between Macedonia and the EU, as well as strategic partnership agreements with the United Kingdom and Hungary.

In the economic sphere, he highlighted that, according to the latest statistics, North Macedonia is a leader in the region and in Europe in terms of foreign investment relative to GDP.

“Citizens and businesses want to see the results on the ground. The benefits of major investments are usually visible after six months to a year, through new and better-paid jobs, increased productivity, and cooperation with domestic companies,” Mucunski said.

He emphasized that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, together with the Directorate for Technological Industrial Development Zones, is actively working to guarantee security and assistance for foreign investors, with the aim of ensuring that investments positively affect citizens’ living standards.

“I assure you that we will intensify our efforts to achieve an even stronger position in the next evaluation next year,” Minister Mucunski said in an interview with NewsMax Balkans.
