Motion proposing new central bank governor expected to be filed to Parliament

Skopje, 19 May 2025 (MIA) – The President on Monday should file to Parliament a motion proposing a new governor of the National Bank, which is due to be discussed at a plenary session tomorrow.

The five-year term of the incumbent governor, Anita Angelovska Bezhoska, who took office on May 22, 2018, ends on May 21.

“There are several candidates and it’s important that we avoid a situation in which no candidate is elected,” President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova stated last week announcing she will propose Angelovska-Bezhoska’s successor today.

Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski has stated that seasoned candidates are being considered for the post of central bank governor, adding he is confident they will maintain macroeconomic stability.

According to Mickoski, one of the conditions under which VMRO-DPMNE and the government will support a candidate running for governor is “strict safeguarding of denar’s fixed exchange rate.”

Angelovska-Bezhoska’s predecessors include Dimitar Bogov (2011-2018), Petar Goshev (2004-2011), Ljube Trpeski (1997-2004) and Borko Stanoevski (1986-1997).
