Mickoski: There is a proposed date for meeting with Sofia, waiting on Bulgaria’s response

Skopje, 14 June 2025 (MIA) - Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said Saturday the Government is in communication with the European Commission’s office in the country following the initiative for a meeting with Bulgaria, noting there is a proposed date for a meeting which is awaiting Bulgaria’s response.

“We have communicated with the office of the European Commission both yesterday and today, there still hasn’t been a response. There is a proposed date so let’s wait for the Bulgarian side to respond,” Mickoski told journalist’s Saturday when quizzed if he has spoken to the President of the European Council, António Costa, and if Bulgaria would accept a meeting.

On Friday, President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova said that although the rule is to have a meeting with her counterpart, she has no problem to sit down for a meeting with Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov at the NATO Summit in The Hague in an attempt to have the country’s EU integration process unblocked, after it has been confirmed that her Bulgarian counterpart, President Rumen Radev, won’t attend the summit.

"I talked with Mr. António Costa about a potential meeting, as the proposal was his. I’ll travel there if it’s my turn. The rule is to have a meeting with the counterpart, but it doesn’t depend on me, it depends on our neighbours. As we are so close, we can have talks nearby, however it was Mr. Costa’s proposal. When I was in Nice, he told me that Mr. Radev won’t attend the NATO Summit, Zhelyazkov will come instead,” Siljanovska Davkova said.

Asked whether a possible meeting with Zhelyazkov has been confirmed, the President said it should be confirmed by the European Council President since it was his proposal.
