Mickoski denies Kazandol mine will reopen

Skopje, 20 August 2025 (MIA) - During the visit to the new facility at Kochani’s Amphenol company on Wednesday, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said it is not true that the Kazandol mine will be reopened.
Investors in the Kazandol project have lost their case and the €115 million compensation claim.
“They no longer hold a concession. Claims that the mine will reopen after the company lost the case are untrue. This is a fabrication and an attempt at manipulation by certain groups acting against the interests of Macedonia and its citizens,” Mickoski stated.

He noted that this is the second arbitration case the government has won, with at least two more expected soon. For him, the real question is how in the past it was common practice to lose arbitration cases, while now suddenly they are being won in favor of the state.
"This should be investigated. Yes, we made certain changes to the legal team, but it is somehow symptomatic how in the past all arbitrations were lost as a rule, and now we are winning them. In this case, it was an arbitration worth around €115 million. That was the claim filed by the opposing party against the defendant, which was Macedonia. The reason for this arbitration was the concession terminated by the government for the establishment of the Kazandol mine," PM Mickoski said.
