Skopje, 20 September 2025 (MIA) - First Deputy PM and Environment Minister Izet Mexhiti said Saturday that everything needed will be done to address the environmental damage caused by the Trubarevo fire.

Mexhiti noted that once conditions allow, comprehensive analyses of water and soil will be conducted, based on which suitable actions will follow.

“The government responded quickly and institutionally, containing the fire in a short period. Nearby residents were evacuated, firefighters acted heroically, and the problem was resolved within a day. Of course, such a large-scale fire causes pollution, which is why the Ministry engaged accredited and private laboratories. Analyses were conducted and the public was transparently informed. All necessary steps will be taken to repair the damage,” Mexhiti said, noting that soil and water tests will follow once conditions allow. He spoke while answering media questions after VMRO-DPMNE’s promotional event for Skopje mayor.

The fire in Trubarevo broke out on Saturday, September 13. A facility with improperly stored waste caught fire. Due to its scale and danger, the fire could not be brought under control. It engulfed most of the stored electronic waste and facilities of the recycling branch. The burning caused a massive release of smoke, ash, and gases into the air.
