Mayor Arsovska's attacker gets two-year suspended sentence

Skopje, 31 October 2025 (MIA) – The Skopje-based Criminal Court on Friday ordered a two-year suspended sentence to Rexhep Nuredini, based on his guilty plea, for the attack on Skopje Mayor Danela Arsovska in July 2025. The sentence will not be effectuated provided he does not commit a crime in the next five years.

In a statement to the media after Friday's hearing, Nuredini's defence attorney Naser Raufi said the defendant has contributed to the efficiency of the procedure by pleading guilty, adding that supervision along with probation measures were also ordered in the case.

"At the main hearing today, the defendant Rexhep Nuredini showed sincere remorse for what he had done, for his rude behaviour towards the injured party. Also, the Mayor herself showed the virtue of forgiving the defendant for what he had done, she did not even join the criminal prosecution, nor did she announce a property claim, which helped to impose the maximum alternative sentence in the case. There are truly mitigating circumstances in the case, not only the apology, the remorse by the defendant, but also the promise to refrain from such outbursts in the future. His contribution to the efficient completion of this criminal procedure was obvious," said Raufi.

Skopje Mayor Danela Arsovska left the court visibly upset, declining to give a statement to the media.

The case refers to a July 11 incident when Arsovska was looking into reports of illegal constructions in the municipality of Chair.

According to the indictment, Rexhep Nuredini is accused of committing the crime of "violence" under Article 386, paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code.

"On July 11, 2025, at around 11:30 am, on Sevastopolska Street in Skopje, he grossly insulted and threatened the safety of the injured party, Danela Arsovska, and thereby caused a feeling of insecurity, threat and fear in the public," reads the indictment.
