Filipche says SDSM ready to discuss introduction of single electoral district as PM urges opposition to back idea

Skopje, 30 May 2025 (MIA) - The leader of opposition party SDSM, Venko Filipche, said Friday the party is ready to discuss Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski’s call to amend the Electoral Code with the goal of introducing a single electoral district in the country, but noted that all political parties should be consulted.

“We are ready to discuss anything, however this is something that all political parties should participate in, since the introduction of a single electoral district isn’t the only issue, but there’s also the electoral threshold and open lists,” Filipche said.

At a Q&A session of Parliament on Thursday, Prime Minister Mickoski urged opposition MPs to back amendments to the Electoral Code which would introduce a single electoral district in the country and allow the diaspora to vote in the country’s parliamentary elections as well.

“I urge all of you, together, to amend the Electoral Code and introduce a single electoral district and allow the creation of polling stations in those countries where this is permitted by the Constitution outside the diplomatic and consular missions. I am ready to do this immediately, as well as the MPs from VMRO-DPMNE's coalition, we are ready to back that law that would introduce a single electoral district which would also include votes from the diaspora,” Prime Minister Mickoski said in response to an MP’s question.
