Education Ministry to conduct analysis over homebound instruction for students injured in Kochani fire

Skopje, 6 August 2025 (MIA) - The Ministry of Education and Science will conduct an analysis on whether and how many of the students injured in the Kochani fire would need to study at home as the school year begins.

Minister of Education and Science Vesna Janevska, who officially announced on Wednesday the introduction of formal primary education for children with cancer undergoing long-term treatment in hospital conditions, said that as of September, efforts will be made to provide such type of education for students who are undergoing rehabilitation after injuries sustained in the fire that broke out at the 'Pulse' nightclub.

"It is summer now, we will conduct an analysis. If there is a need, they will definitely be included, although I'm not sure that there are many of them. Some of those who were completing their fourth year have already taken the state graduation exam. I believe one or two children are left to take the state graduation exam now," Minister Janevska said in response to a reporter's question at Wednesday's event at Skopje's University Clinic for Children's Diseases.

Asked whether such type of education will also be provided for children receiving treatment at home, in addition to treatment in hospital conditions, she said the project provides for the same principle for homebound children.

"Definitely, the children with cancer, in addition to receiving treatment at the hospital, are undergoing rehabilitation at home. The teacher assigned to a child can visit them at home, if conditions allow and if the child's health allows, or they can learn the necessary material online. But, besides the fact that they will not be held back a year, they will also be motivated. Whether in a clinic, at home or in a rehabilitation centre, schooling will take place, and thus, socialization of these children as well," Janevska pointed out.

She noted that the project has multiple benefits, and the children will feel empathy from the school, their friends and teachers.

"The benefits are multiple, and I really regret that this has not been implemented so far," the Minister of Education and Science added.
