Day of the Macedonian Revolutionary Struggle marked with formal ceremony in Skopje

Skopje, 23 October 2025 (MIA) – Thursday marks the Day of the Macedonian Revolutionary Struggle – October 23.

On 23 October 1893, Hristo Tatarchev, Dame Gruev, Petar Pop Arsov, Anton Dimitrov and Hristo Botandzhiev, at the house of Ivan Hadzhi Nikolov in Thessaloniki, formed the Macedonian Revolutionary Committee, which later on became the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organisation (VMRO) or Internal Macedonian Odrin Revolutionary Organisation (VMORO).

VMRO’s establishment marked the start of an organised struggle of the Macedonian people and other nationalities for the establishment of an independent country. The day symbolises the continuity of Macedonian struggle for independence, which resulted in establishing a modern, sovereign Macedonian state.

To mark the Macedonian Revolutionary Struggle Day, a formal academy titled “From an Idea to a State” will be held at the Macedonian National Theatre, which will include an address by Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski.

A parliamentary delegation, including the MPs Katerina Dimitrovska and Malisha Stankovikj, will lay wreaths at the monument honouring the founders of VMRO in downtown Skopje.

Also, a ceremony in Parliament will be held, where the 2025 October 23 Award for outstanding achievements in science, culture, education, protection of state interests and promotion of state priorities, values and cultural and historical heritage of public interest of the Republic of North Macedonia will be presented to Goce Todorovski (actor), Aleksandar Kujundziski (writer of children’s books), Bratislav Tashkovski (poet, playwright and journalist) and academic Bozhin Pavlovski (writer)
