Ahmeti: DUI agrees on single electoral district with threshold, EU and US to be consulted about caretaker gov’t

Skopje, 14 January 2026 (MIA) - The leader of the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI), Ali Ahmeti, told journalists after Wednesday’s leaders’ meeting that the party backs the introduction of a single electoral district with a threshold of 5 percent and open lists. Ahmeti said the European Union and the United States should be consulted about a potential decision to scrap the Przhino-style caretaker government.

“Regarding the caretaker government, we believe that we should consult with the international community, the international factors and partners who co-authored the text on the Przhino-style government – the EU and the US,” Ahmeti said.

Ahmeti said the party presented its proposal about amending the Electoral Code.

“We agree on a single electoral district, with a threshold of 5 percent and open lists. Now this issue remains for further discussions,” the DUI leader said.

Quizzed about the election of an ombudsman, Ahmeti said he has requested additional consultations.

“The necessary consultations were not carried out, instead actions were taken arbitrarily, and consensual democracy has its rules. What remains is for the parliamentary whips to look for solutions and additional consultations on how we can resolve this issue,” Ahmeti stressed.

Regarding the legislation necessary for the implementation of the Safe City traffic camera system which require a Badinter majority in Parliament and are currently blocked by the DUI-led European Front, Ahmeti stressed that the parliamentary whips should meet and find a solution.

On other issues he planned to raise at the meeting, Ahmeti said it was decided to hold an additional meeting with the Prime Minister.
