16th MakeDox Creative Documentary Film Festival to open next week in Skopje

16th MakeDox Creative Documentary Film Festival to open next week in Skopje

Skopje, 13 August 2025 (MIA) – One hundred foreign guests will attend MakeDox, the Creative Documentary Film Festival, whose 16th edition will run from August 21 through August 28.

75 documentaries will be screened at five venues in Skopje, including Kurshumli An, Youth Cultural Center, Museum of Macedonia, Suli An and Laboratorium, announced the festival’s executive director, Darko Nabakov, program coordinator Petula Veljanovska, and Sara Ferro, manager of the industry program.

“Who cares about reality?” is this year’s festival motto, Nabakov told a news conference.

“75 films will vie for five prizes, namely the Onion award in the main program, Young Onion award for up-and-comers, Sliced Onion award for best short documentary, the Onion Seed award for best student film and MakeDox’s special award recognizing ethic ideas. 100 guests from abroad have been already confirmed,” he said.

The festival will open with “Bardo”, a film by Slovak director Viera Čákanyová. “It’s no coincidence that this film was picked to open the festival because it is about wildfires happening everywhere in the world, here as well, and how people and even animals deal with them,” said Veljanovska

MakeDox will close with “Fiume or Death” by Croatian director Igor Bezinovic.

In a response to a journalist’s question, Nabakov said the Film Agency this year increased its financial support for the festival, 50,000 denars, but, unfortunately, it lost the Culture Ministry’s financial assistance, which last year stood at 800,000 denars.
