‘Ss. Cyril and Methodius’ state university marks 76th anniversary

Skopje, 23 May 2025 (MIA) - This day is not just a celebration of a number or an anniversary, it is a reminder of a long and valuable history of generations of professors, students and researches who have traced the path of knowledge, progress and social development in our country and beyond, stressed speakers at Friday’s ceremony marking the 76th anniversary since the establishment of the “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” University (UKIM) in Skopje.

At the ceremony, Minister of Education and Science Vesna Janevska stressed that the international success of students from the university is a testimony to the fact that UKIM educates young people who are prepared for the challenges of the new age. The goal, she said, is for the university to continue to improve and join the list of the top 1.000 universities in the world.

“We owe this to the university’s namesakes and founders of Slavic literacy, as well as all their students, Clement and Naum who founded the Ohrid Literary School, the first Slavic and the oldest European university,” Janevska said in her address.

UKIM rector Biljana Angelova stressed that over the past 76 years, UKIM has grown into the largest, oldest and most influential higher education and research institution in the country.

The best students who graduated from the university in the 2023/2024 academic year were presented with certificates at the ceremony.

The university is marking its anniversary with a three-day program, as part of which it will present the title “professor honoris causa” to Prof. Dr. Peter Mark from the Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany.

Before the ceremony, delegations from the country’s leadership and UKIM, led by rector Angelova, laid flowers in front of the monument to Ss. Cyril and Methodius.
