Barcelona, 2 March 2021 (dpa/MIA) – Real Madrid missed the chance to move back into second place in La Liga with a home draw against Real Sociedad on Monday.
Real Madrid went close on three occasions in the first half but efforts from Mariano Diaz, Marco Asensio and Raphael Varane were all denied by the frame of the goal.
Real Sociedad took the lead on 55 minutes when Nacho Monreal crossed for Portu and he outjumped Ferland Mendy to score with a header.
It could have been two, moments later when Portu crossed and Alexander Isak just failed to turn the ball in from close range.
Vinicius levelled on 89 minutes by turning in Lucas Vazquez’ cross after Fede Valverde’s back heel.
He was playing his 100th game for Madrid and he had marked it with a vital goal.
Real Madrid stay third still five points behind Atletico who they face on Sunday.
It felt like an opportunity lost and Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane was annoyed by post-match questioning that focused on his tactical changes during the game.
He had switched to a back three at the start of the second half and Real Sociedad promptly enjoyed their best spell and took the lead.
“Did it have an adverse effect on the team? Well if you have asked me three times the same question then maybe it did,” said the Madrid coach.
Asked about the points gap at the top he added: “All teams are dropping points but we know we have to pick up wins. There are still a lot of games to go.”
He did not rule out a return for Karim Benzema for Sunday’s derby and said the failure to win would not affect his team going into that game.
“This does not condition our approach to that match at all,” he said. “We just need to play a very good game against Atletico.”
