Washington, 25 January 2019 (MIA) – US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo wants to urge other countries to recognize Juan Guaido as the interim president of Venezuela at the UN Security Council on Saturday, his office has announced in a statement.
Washington has requested an urgent meeting on the country’s crisis, but it has not been officially scheduled yet, dpa reports.
The State Department issued a statement announcing Pompeo’s travel to New York City, signalling that he expects the session of the 15-member council to take place.
“Secretary Pompeo will urge members of the Security Council and the international community to uphold international peace and security by recognizing Juan Guaido as the constitutional interim president of Venezuela,” State Department spokesman Robert Palladino said in the statement.
Pompeo also plans to voice support for the transitional government “in their quest to restore democracy and the rule of law” and underscore US government support for the Venezuelan people.
