Kiev, 18 May 2021 (dpa/MIA) — Ukrainian Health Minister Maxim Stepanov stepped down on Tuesday amid disappointment at the slow pace of coronavirus vaccinations in the country.
He had only been in the job since March 2020 and is the third health minister to step down since the pandemic’s start.
At the moment, Ukraine reportedly has about 2 million vaccine doses on hand, for a population of about 40 million. About 950,000 people have received a first vaccine dose, and only about 28,000 have received the second dose required to be considered fully vaccinated.
The pandemic is believed to have claimed 50,000 lives since March 2020, with more than 2.1 million cases reported during that time.
During the same legislative session, the resignations of Infrastructure Minister Vladislav Krikli and Economy Minister Igor Petrashko were also accepted. Their departures were prompted by anger at the economic crisis loosed by the pandemic.
