Skopje, 13 July 2020 (MIA) – The U.S. Embassy in North Macedonia handed over on Monday a donation to the State Election Commission (SEC) consisting of 50,000 face masks and 10,000 bottles of disinfectant, to aid the government’s efforts to conduct safe election and protect public health.
“It is an honor to be here today with State Election Commission president [Oliver] Derkovski to commemorate this donation on behalf of the United States government. The 50,000 masks and 10,000 bottles of disinfectant that we’re donating will contribute to the efforts of the government of North Macedonia to conduct safe and healthy elections,” said U.S. Ambassador to North Macedonia Kate Byrnes, adding that the United States applauds the government for its commitment to democratic values even during these very difficult and unprecedented times.
She underlined that protective equipment and disinfectants are in high demand during the pandemic and pharmacies across the country are striving to meet these needs and help ensure the safety of fellow citizens.
“We’re encouraged that the government is taking active measures to ensure the conduct of safe and healthy elections and to protect the citizens and the election workers on this day and during the first ever elections held during a pandemic here in this country,” Ambassador Byrnes said.
The United States, she stressed, “remain steadfast and committed to our partner North Macedonia – our newest NATO ally, as we confront this global crisis together.”
SEC president Oliver Derkovski thanked the U.S Embassy for the donation.
“The donation of 50,000 face masks and 10,000 bottles of disinfectant from the U.S. Embassy and its organizations will help us conduct the election and ensure citizens’ safety during the process,” Derkovski said.
He expressed hopes that cooperation between the SEC and the U.S. Embassy will continue in the future.
