Istanbul, 10 November 2020 (dpa/MIA) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan congratulated the United States’ new president-elect, Joe Biden, on his victory in the 2020 presidential election, in a message published on the Turkish presidency website.
Turkey is determined to “work closely with the US administration” with whom Ankara has a “strong cooperation and bond of alliance,” Erdogan said.
The two countries need to further improve their ties, the Turkish president added, citing current “challenges we face on the regional and global level.”
“As we have addressed on many occasions during your Vice Presidency as well, Turkey-US relations have a strategic quality with a deep-rooted basis,” Erdogan said, addressing Biden.
Many world leaders congratulated Biden on his election win over the weekend, while Erdogan initially held back.
Although Erdogan has cultivated a personal friendship with the incumbent US President Donald Trump, NATO allies Ankara and Washington remain at loggerheads over a number of issues.
US senators have called for sanctions to be imposed on Ankara over the purchase of a Russian defence missile system.
