Suarez scores, Atletico go two points clear of faltering Real Madrid

Atletico Madrid confirmed their place at the top of La Liga with a 1-0 win over Getafe in the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday.

Barcelona, 31 December 2020 (dpa/MIA) — Atletico Madrid confirmed their place at the top of La Liga with a 1-0 win over Getafe in the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday.

Luis Suarez got the only goal of the game on 20 minutes with a glancing header from a Yannick Carrasco free-kick.

Getafe had chances to equalize but Xabier Etxeita blazed over when set up by Jaime Mata’s clever flick.

Atletico’s win meant that they would end the year on top whatever Real Madrid did in the later game away at Elche.

Madrid’s slip in the late game left Diego Simeone’s side two points clear at the top with two games in hand.

It was the perfect way for him to mark his 500th game in charge, with his Atletico side undefeated at home in 2020.

“When I arrived here I said I would take it one game at a time and that is what I will continue to do until the situation changes and we have to leave the club,” Simeone said post-match when asked if he could go on for 1,000 games.

Atletico had won the game despite Kieran Trippier missing his first minutes of the season after his ban from the English Football Association for breaking betting rules.

“It seems very unfair that Atletico Madrid are affected by this and the Football Association are not,” Simeone said as Trippier is set to miss 13 games for his club and none for England during the 10-week ban.

“We will talk with Kieran in the coming days to see if we can reduce the ban,” the manager said.

Real Madrid took the lead in their game against Elche with a Luka Modric header after Marco Asensio’s shot had come back off the bar on 19 minutes.

But Elche levelled on 52 minutes when Fidel Chaves converted a penalty awarded after Dani Carvajal brought down Antonio Barragan.

“These things happen but everyone is going to drop points so we just have to keep going,” said Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane, who admitted he was disappointed to finish the year with draw having won their previous six games.
