Canberra, 17 July 2020 (dpa/MIA) – A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck waters near Papua New Guinea on Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The quake hit at 12:50 pm (0250 GMT) in the waters close to Hercules Bay, some 114 kilometres from Kokoda in eastern Papua New Guinea, at a depth of 85 kilometres.
A tsunami warning was initially issued for northern Papua New Guinea but was later removed by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.
“Minor seal level fluctuation may occur in some coastal areas near the earthquake over the next few hours,” the centre warned.
Papua New Guinea authorities have not issued any statement on damages or impact.
