In her note, President Siljanovska-Davkova said the Roma community has demonstrated it is a “creative, capable, diligent and adaptable community deserving of respect”, while also highlighting some of the challenges faced by the Romani people.
“This day also reminds me that you are still the most impoverished, vulnerable, marginalized, disadvantaged and discriminated community. It is time for us to move from words to actions and provide you with tangible support, give you priority and reach for affirmative action and inclusive policies, to enable you to express and demonstrate your abilities and ideas and to include your effort and knowledge in the development of a democratic society,” Siljanovska-Davkova said.
Prime Minister Mickoski said the Government’s challenge and goal is to raise the social and economic status of the Roma community.
“Macedonia is a country which historically and traditionally has always been an example for tolerance, understanding and inclusion regardless of the citizens’ ethnic or religious belonging. Our challenge and goal as a Government and as a country in the coming period is to raise the social and economic status of the Romani people, and with that, improve the overall position of the Romani people in all areas of social life,” Mickoski stressed.
Speaker Gashi highlighted the importance of the Roma community as an “integral part of our shared heritage that makes society richer and more diverse”.
“As representatives of the citizens, we have a duty and responsibility to constantly work on promoting the rights and the position of the Roma community, ensuring equal opportunity and conditions for a dignified life for all our compatriots. Our shared aspiration should be a society in which differences are respected, where every individual has a chance to achieve their full potential and where we live in harmony, respect and mutual understanding,” Gashi said.
