Skopje, 17 June 2026 (MIA) – First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of European Affairs Bekim Sali welcomed the European Parliament debate on North Macedonia’s report saying that the messages conveyed by the MEPs are a strong confirmation for the country’s European perspective and an additional motivation to resume the reform process, Sali’s office said in a press release.

At the debate, European Parliament rapporteur for North Macedonia, Thomas Waitz voiced encouraging messages about the European perspective of the country saying the country has the capacity and the potential to be part of the next wave of EU enlargement. 

“This is a crucial message coming at a crucial moment for our country. The fact that the European Parliament recognized North Macedonia’s progress noting the country could be the next member of the European Union is an encouragement for all institutions to keep pursuing reforms harder. Europe sees North Macedonia as being part of the European family and our duty is to justify this trust by delivering results,” stated Sali. 

The government, he stressed, remains fully committed to implementing reforms in rule of law, public administration, economic development and strengthening of democratic institutions as key prerequisites for progress in the EU integration process.
 
“EU membership is not only a foreign policy objective, it’s also a strategic choice that helps provide stronger institutions, economic development and growing opportunities for the citizens. Our European perspective is clear and tangible. Today’s debate in the European Parliament is a confirmation that North Macedonia belongs in the European Union. Our duty is by delivering reforms, results and through political maturity to use the momentum and bring the country closer to full-fledged membership in the European family,” the EU minister said.

As regards the issues reviewed as part of the report, Sali said North Macedonia remains committed to European values, good neighbourly ties and constructive dialogue in line with the negotiating framework and EU principles.
