Real Madrid reduced to nine men in home defeat to Vigo, Napoli win

Madrid, 8 December 2025 (PA Media/dpa/MIA) - Nine-man Real Madrid crashed to a 2-0 home defeat to mid-table Celta Vigo as their stuttering La Liga season plunged from bad to worse on Sunday.

Williot Swedberg scored two second-half goals to secure a famous win for the visitors, while the home side had both Fran Garcia and Alvaro Carreras sent off.

Their shock loss leaves Real four points adrift of title rivals Barcelona and means they have won just one of their last five domestic games.

Hugo Duro snatched an injury-time equalizer as Sevilla drew 1-1 at Valencia, while a Roberto Fernandez penalty proved enough for Espanyol to edge Rayo Vallecano as Elche thumped Girona 3-0.

Rasmus Hojlund scored twice as defending champions Napoli returned to the top of Serie A with a 2-1 win over Juventus.

Hojlund fired a seventh-minute opener for the hosts and despite an equaliser from Kenan Yildiz on the hour mark, his second – 12 minutes from time – handed Antonio Conte’s men their third-straight league win.

Roma fell to their second defeat on the bounce after a shock 1-0 loss in Cagliari, handing the home side their first win in 10 Serie A games.

Gianluca Gaetano pounced eight minutes from time to grab the only goal of the game against the visitors, who had been reduced to 10 men on 52 minutes after a red card for Zeki Celik.

Lazio held on for a 1-1 draw at home to Bologna despite the late dismissal of Mario Gila, while Cremonese beat Lecce 2-0 for their second-straight win.

Lyon’s hopes of nudging close to the top four in Ligue 1 were hit by a 1-0 defeat at Lorient.

Pablo Pagis scored the only goal of the game in the 39th minute, while the visitors had Ainsley Maitland-Niles sent off late in the first half.

Tom Louchet also saw red as Nice lost 1-0 at home to Angers for their fifth-successive league defeat, Auxerre beat Metz 3-1 for their first win in 10 and Le Havre versus Paris FC ended goalless.
