Spain and Britain reach deal on Gibraltar’s border

Spain and Britain have reached a last-minute deal that allows Gibraltar to retain free movement with Spain, Spain's Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya said on Thursday.

Madrid, 31 December 2020 (dpa/MIA) — Spain and Britain have reached a last-minute deal that allows Gibraltar to retain free movement with Spain, Spain’s Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya said on Thursday.

Gibraltar is to become part of the passport-free Schengen area, avoiding a hard external EU border in the new year.

On Jan. 1, Britain’s post-Brexit transition phase ends, meaning that Britain and its overseas territories will no longer be part of the European Union’s single market and customs union.

Gibraltar entering the Schengen area could mean that external border controls would take place at its international airport instead of at the border to Spain, though it remains unclear who would take charge of the checks.
