Brussels, 27 October 2020 (dpa/MIA) – European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas has tested positive for the new coronavirus and has gone into quarantine – the second EU commissioner to do so.
“I have just learned that my regular scheduled Covid-19 test… came back positive. I am now self-isolating as required,” Schinas – who is in charge of a mixed policy portfiolio covering migration and social rights – tweeted on Tuesday.
His boss, President Ursula von der Leyen, was among many EU officials who promptly wished him a quick recovery. “Take good care of yourself,” she tweeted.
EU Research Commissioner Mariya Gabriel also tested positive earlier this month.
Belgium is one of the European countries hit hardest by the pandemic, and the capital Brussels, home to many EU institutions, is currently one of the worst-affected regions in the bloc.
