Skopje, 1 June 2020 (MIA) – Fifth of July is election day, SDSM leader Zoran Zaev said Monday, adding the parties have 35 days to prepare.
Election would be held 22 days after the state of emergency is lifted, he said.
President Stevo Pendarovski extended the nationwide state of emergency, for the fourth time, on Saturday. It ends in mid-June.
Zaev confirmed that SDSM and VMRO-DPMNE had had communication, but it ended without agreement.
Speaking at a news conference, Zaev said that although the coronavirus epidemic was seemingly subsiding, the country has been recording many asymptomatic COVID-19 cases. According to him, it comes as a result of people failing to comply with anti-coronavirus measures.
After the elections, the SDSM leader noted, the government has to dedicate itself to economic recovery.
Zaev confirmed that two top SDSM officials have tested positive for COVID-19 and that PM Oliver Spasovski was tested this morning and his results are pending.
