Skopje, 11 July 2020 (MIA) – A Declaration for Youth, Education and the Future was signed Saturday in Skopje by the student assemblies of four state universities and party representatives of SDSM and the We Can coalition, DOM, VMRO-DPMNE and the Renewal for Macedonia coalition, DPA, Macedonian Concept and Voice for Macedonia.
These include Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, Mother Teresa University, St. Clement of Ohrid University in Bitola and Goce Delchev University in Shtip.
The event was organized to highlight the dire situation higher education in the country is, according to the Skopje University’s assembly of students.
“The need to sign the declaration arose from the decades of no political will for serious reforms in education,” said Borjan Eftimov, President of the Student Assembly of the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University.
Education, he said, is the backbone of a society and we must not allow it to be destroyed only because of the absence of capacity of the political parties, or even worse, allow education to fall victim to bargaining between coalition.
“The state has to focus on state education and on salvaging it, because only investments in the public education system can contribute to progress in the society as well as equal opportunities for every individual regardless of the social status,” he said noting students were wishing for changes in education.
