St. Theopemptus, Bishop of Nicomedia and Theona the Sorcerer, martyrs
When the persecution of Diocletian broke out in 290, Saint Theopemptus, a bishop of Nicomedia, was taken for his confession of Christ, and convicted Diocletian to his face for his error and ungodliness. Remaining unhurt after cruel, tortures, he was given poison to drink, which had been prepared by a sorcerer named Theonas. Protected by divine grace from this also, he drew Theonas to Christ, and after other torments, was beheaded. Saint Theonas was cast into a pit and buried alive.
Week of prayer for Christian unity
Catholics across the globe will set aside the week of January 18-25 to pray that Christians may overcome their sectarian differences and “that all may be one” in Christ. The churches and Christian communities observe the Week of Prayer together through a single common service, an Order of Worship for an Ecumenical Service. “I am the way”, says Jesus. This means that Christ is not only the source and the goal of unity, but also the one who accompanies and guides his church on its journey and its growth towards unity.
