Pique talks up title challenge as Messi sends Barcelona second

Barcelona moved up to second in La Liga with a 2-0 win away at Sevilla on Saturday.

Barcelona, 28 February 2021 (dpa/MIA) — Barcelona moved up to second in La Liga with a 2-0 win away at Sevilla on Saturday.

The hard fought victory had Gerard Pique declaring after the match that his team could still win the league title.

Ousmane Dembele raced on to a Lionel Messi pass on 29 minutes to score the first.

Barcelona had chances to extend their lead but could not take them. Messi put the ball over the top from a Dembele assist and a shot from Sergino Dest came back off the post.

With five minutes left Barcelona got the second when substitute Ilaix Moriba nudged the ball on to Messi and he bundled his way past Fernando and keeper Bono to score.

Barcelona did lose Pedri to what looked like an ankle injury in the second half and defender Ronald Araujo appeared to aggravate his ankle injury after coming on and had to be taken off.

But when asked about the ongoing injury problems Pique was not deflated.

“We just have to be mentally strong and if we are, it doesn’t matter who plays we can get results,” the defender said.

“I’m very happy today. I feel very proud of the team. We have lifted ourselves up again. We are alive. There is still a title race for sure.

“We have had a great 2021 so far apart from the game against Paris Saint-Germain and Cadiz. We played a great team today and they did not have a shot on goal,” Pique added.

Barcelona are two points behind leaders Atletico Madrid who have two games in hand and play at Villarreal on Sunday.
