Berlin, 16 October 2020 (dpa/MIA) – Organizers confirmed on Friday that the Formula One Vietnam Grand Prix will not take place in 2020 due to global coronavirus pandemic.
“This was a very difficult decision for all of us to make but ultimately it was the only solution after carefully reviewing all safety criteria as well as the efficiency under current conditions,” said local organizing chief Le Ngoc Chi.
The race around a street circuit in Hanoi was supposed to debut in the F1 calendar on April 5 to start a multi-year contract but was initially postponed.
However, it has long been clear the event would not take place this year with F1 announcing a revised 17-race calendar with only the final three races, in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, taking place outside Europe.
Thirteen scheduled races have been scrapped from the original schedule including the showpiece grand prix in Monaco.
Defending world champion Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes leads the standings going into the Portuguese Grand Prix on October 25.
