Sydney, 21 January 2020 (dpa/MIA) – A man has been placed in isolation in his home in Brisbane while health authorities run tests on whether he is carrying a new coronavirus, Australian medical officials announced Tuesday.
The man had recently returned from visiting family in Wuhan in China and was showing symptoms of the virus, Queensland’s chief medical officer Dr Jeannette Young told reporters Tuesday afternoon.
“We’ve done some tests on him and are awaiting test results,” she said at a press conference in Brisbane.
Results may not be known for several days, but Dr Young said Australia did not yet have specific tests for the new strain of coronavirus that has developed in Wuhan.
Earlier Tuesday Australian health authorities announced biosecurity tests would be done on flights from Wuhan to Sydney to try to detect anyone infected with the virus.
