London, 22 September 2020 (dpa/MIA) – Manchester City made a winning start to their Premier League campaign on Monday as they came away from Wolves with a 2-1 victory.
Kevin de Bruyne and Phil Foden scored the goals and though Raul Jimenez pulled one back late on for Wolves, Gabriel Jesus added a third deep into time added on.
Aston Villa also picked up three points in their season-opener, edging out 10-man Sheffield United 1-0.
Given an extra week off to recover after finishing their Europeans season late, City were without Ilkay Gundogan, who is self-isolating after testing positive for the novel coronavirus.
City made a good start and were ahead within 20 minutes when De Bruyne won a penalty as he fell over the sliding legs of Romain Saiss.
The Belgian converted it himself and Foden doubled their lead 12 minutes later, finishing off a slick move.
Jimenez headed Wolves into contention in the 78th minute and the hosts were chasing an equalizer as time ran out.
But de Bruyne fed Jesus and the striker’s shot was deflected in for City‘s third to round things off.
Earlier, Ezri Konsa scored the only goal of the game as Villa beat 10-man Sheffield United 1-0.
The defender headed Villa ahead on 63 minutes after John Egan had been sent off for United after just 12 minutes.
Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved a penalty from John Lundstram on his debut and the hosts hung on for victory in their opening match of the season.
Martinez, who joined Villa from Arsenal, said he was thankful he guessed the right way.
“I follow my instincts,” he said. “You study but at the end of the day, I study my instincts. It’s like scoring a hat-trick for me.”
