Bratislava, 13 January 2020 (dpa/MIA) – A man admitted unexpectedly on Monday to murdering Slovakian journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancee around two years ago.

The man, identified as Miroslav M, had previously contested his guilt. He is accused of having killed Kuciak and Martina Kusnirova by shooting them in the head and chest.

On Monday he admitted to the murders. Also charged were an accomplice; the probable organizer of the killings, Marian Kocner; and a woman who allegedly organized the contact between them.

Kuciak had been investigating links between politicians, business and organized crime before he was shot on February 21, 2018, together with Martina Kusnirova, in their home in the village of Velka Maca.

Proceedings began on Monday in Pezinok, near Bratislava. On December 19 the special court for organized crime formally accepted the charge at a preliminary hearing. The defendants sought at that point to have the trial pushed back, citing apparent formal errors in the indictment.
