Madrid edge past Getafe to move four points clear in La Liga

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos took his side closer to the Spanish title by firing home from the penalty spot to earn them a 1-0 win over Getafe on Thursday.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos took his side closer to the Spanish title by firing home from the penalty spot to earn them a 1-0 win over Getafe on Thursday.

Madrid moved four points clear of second-place Barcelona at the top of La Liga with five rounds remaining, thanks to their skipper’s fourth goal in six matches.

Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made a fine save to deny Nemanja Maksimovic early on and also stopped an effort from Jaime Mata as the visitors started well at the Alfredo di Stefano stadium.

Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior should have opened the scoring for Madrid but David Soria brilliantly kept out his sliding effort.

Getafe continued to probe and Ramos was forced into taking a yellow card after a cynical foul on Mata, while Soria did well to deny Isco.

The second half was tighter, with fewer chances, until Mathias Olivera brought down Dani Carvajal in the area.

Ramos slotted home from the penalty spot in the 79th minute to decisively send his side ahead and settle a tight clash.

Earlier in the match the referee waved away Getafe complaints when Carvajal appeared to knock over Olivera in the other box.

Defending champions Barcelona drew 2-2 at home against Atletico Madrid, following up a 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo, throwing away their advantage from before the season restarted.

“We had to take advantage of Barcelona’s slip up against Atletico, for us this was a final,” said Carvajal. “Getafe made this hard for us, especially in the first half.

“With four points advantage we depend on ourselves, it’s up to us if we’re going to win this league or not.

“The message from the coach after the break [due to the coronavirus health pandemic] was clear, we had 11 games left and we’re going for 33 points.”

Madrid, who last won the title in 2017, have 74 points from 33 games.

Earlier Real Sociedad came from behind to beat Espanyol 2-1, ending their terrible run of form and putting another nail in the visitors’ coffin.

David Lopez opened the scoring for bottom-of-the-table Espanyol after 10 minutes but Willian Jose and Alexander Isak’s strikes helped Real Sociedad to their first win since La Liga resumed in June.

The victory leaves La Real seventh, while Espanyol are 10 points from safety at the foot of the table with only five matches remaining.

Ruben Garcia struck twice for mid-table Osasuna as they won 2-0 at Eibar, 16th, six points above the relegation zone.
