Rome, 27 October 2020 (dpa/MIA) – Leaders AC Milan were held 3-3 against dogged guests Roma despite a brace from star Zlatan Ibrahimovic on Monday, ending a four-game winning run as they closed matchday 5 in the Italian Serie.
Ibrahimovic turned in Rafael Leao’s cross in the second minute and struck from the spot for a temporary 3-2 to tally his sixth goal in the three league games he played, having missed two while in home isolation after a positive coronavirus test.
Roma captain Dzeko had a break stopped before nodding in a corner kick on 14 minutes, soaring above Alessio Romagnoli after a missed clearance by goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu, who filled in as Gianluigi Donnarumma produced a positive test along with Jens Petter Hauge.
The Romans’ keeper Antonio Mirante saved drives from Hakan Calhanoglu and Theo Hernandez and an Alessio Romagnoli header before another nodded attempt by Simon Kjaer hit the post.
As the game flared up around the half hour, the guests also threatened with Roger Ibanez and Lorenzo Pellegrini.
The Devils came close again with a Calhanoglu free-kick and were up again two minutes into the second half as another devastating break from Leao on the left side found the onrushing Alexis Saelemaekers for a taut deflection.
Skipper Dzeko came close with a high volley and saw Jordan Veretout level from the spot for 2-2 in the 71st minute after Ismael Bennacer fouled Pedro.
Eight minutes later Ibrahimovic converted another penalty awarded for Pellegrini’s foul on Calhanoglu, but the 39-year-old Swede also had his say in the guests’ third equalizer, slightly deflecting a corner kick to cut off Tatarusanu and set up Marash Kumbulla’s deflection in the 84th.
“It was a pity that we did not win,” the 21-year-old Leao said. “I think we created many chances, but we will continue to work on our path.
“We play to win all the games and stay top. I am disappointed because we fought together throughout the game, but this is what football can be. Ibra helps us youngsters and I am very happy for his goals.”
Milan, who had conceded only one goal in the previous four games, moved on to 13 points, two above Napoli and Sassuolo, with Roma sitting ninth on eight.
