Kumanovo, 26 August 2020 (MIA) – Defence Minister Radmila Shekerinska visited on Wednesday the Kumanovo – based “Boro Menkov” barracks on the occasion of the activation of the South-Eastern Europe Brigade (SEEBRIG) HQ in North Macedonia from 2020 to 2026.
“Kumanovo is becoming the seat of one of the most important regional initiatives, the South-Eastern Europe Brigade (SEEBRIG). In the next six years, the barracks behind us will host the brigade’s HQ, an important piece of the initiative launched 22 years ago in which [North Macedonia] has taken part in and learned lessons in international cooperation and development of joint defence facilities,” the Minister said.
She added that SEEBRIG is in a way returning home after it was established with the signing of an agreement by the defence ministers of participating countries in Skopje in 1998 and expressed satisfaction over the fact that North Macedonia will finally host SEEBRIG’s HQ and representatives from the armies of its six member states, partners in the area of defence.
Shekerinska underlined that although 2020 was marked by the global COVID-19 pandemic, North Macedonia has had two causes for celebration in the field of defence.
“One is joining NATO after 30 years of waiting and hard work and the other is becoming the host of SEEBRIG’s HQ,” the Defence Minister stressed.
A flag-raising ceremony on the occasion of the activation of the South-Eastern Europe Brigade (SEEBRIG) HQ in North Macedonia from 2020 to 2026 will be held Wednesday afternoon in Kumanovo – based “Boro Menkov” barracks.
“Kumanovo will host SEEBRIG’s HQ for six years, giving us a chance to prove ourselves as professional hosts, open for cooperation. We’re the last member of the initiative to accede to NATO, a process which took a long time, but we never stopped working with other participating countries in preparation to join the Alliance. Now that all initiative members are also members of NATO, we’ll be able to prove the region, as well as the Alliance, that we aren’t just allies, but also good and wise neighbors,” Shekerinska said.
She wished a warm welcome to brigade members, who will live and work together in Kumanovo for the next six years, stressing that this is the first time North Macedonia hosts a regional initiative.
“This is a good investment in our role as member of NATO,” the Minister noted.
