Seoul, 3 July 2020 (dpa/MIA) – Kim Jong Un said North Korea needs to stay on “maximum alert” against the novel coronavirus, while declaring the country’s response a resounding success, state media reported Friday.
The North Korean leader said easing measures too hastily will lead to an “unimaginable and irretrievable crisis” and praised the country’s six months of anti-epidemic efforts as a “shining success,” in comments at a party meeting Thursday, according to state news agency KCNA.
He said Pyongyang has “thoroughly prevented” the virus from making inroads into the country, but warned against complacency.
Little is known about the reclusive nation’s true health situation, and Pyongyang has previously claimed to have recorded no coronavirus infections.
But South Korean news agency Yonhap reported that the fact this was the second such politburo meeting in three months to discuss the pandemic suggests the health situation in the country could be serious.
