Skopje, 10 September 2020 (MIA) – The Association of Journalists of Macedonia (ZNM) and the Independent Trade Union of Journalists and Media Workers (SSNM) say they condemn the attack on Al Jazeera’s crew during Wednesday’s anti-government protest.
In a joint statement, they call on the Interior Ministry to fine the attacker, who can be identified through a video recorded at the event.
An unknown man during yesterday’s protest staged by VMRO-DPMNE in downtown Skopje attacked Al Jazeera’s journalist Milka Smilevska and cameraman Jorde Angelovikj preventing them from doing their professional tasks.
The man grabbed the microphone the reporter was holding after asking her for which medium she was covering the event. Smilevska reported the incident on the spot to a police office who said that the man will be charged, according to the two organizations.
“Journalists doing their job to be treated this way is unacceptable. The perpetrator should be fine by the police because violence against journalists is intolerable in democratic countries,” they note.
