Berlin, 3 May 2021 (dpa/MIA) – Inter Milan are crowned Italian football champions for the first time in 11 years with four games to spare in the Serie A season, ending the nine-year title run of Juventus.
Inter clinched their 19th national title without playing because their only remaining rivals Atalanta failed to win in a 1-1 draw at mid-table Sassuolo and trail by 13 points.
Hundreds of Inter fans immediately started gathering in front of Milan’s cathedral, according to the club’s TV, to celebrate the big moment, but the club also urged them not to violate coronavirus restrictions.
“Now is the time to celebrate, for all Inter fans. An emanating joy that we invite you to express in the most responsible way possible: we are champions in this too,” Inter said.
Hundreds of fans still out on the streets to celebrate past a 10 pm curfew dispersed spontaneously when police arrived.
Inter, who won 2-0 at relegated bottom club Crotone on Saturday, can now celebrate their first Scudetto since the treble-winning 2009-10 season under Jose Mourinho.
Inter are unbeaten in 18 matches and with a tally of 82 points have already matched their best previous showing in the league in a remarkable season under coach Antonio Conte.
They trailed crosstown rivals AC Milan by two points after the first half of the season but 13 wins and two draws has seen them pull away, with Belgian Romelu Lukaku their top scorer with 21 goals.
Atalanta and Milan have 69 points each, Napoli 67 and dethroned Juve, who play later Sunday at Udinese, on 66 in what promises a dramatic finale for the remaining three Champions League berths. Lazio on 64 also have a mathematical chance.
